(October 9, 2013) The early morning sun brightly shines over the Missouri River in Atchison, Kan. (Photo by Kathryn Hermes)
This photo was taken with my “dumb phone”…AKA not the most ideal camera. I was assisting the internationally acclaimed photographer Peter Funch with his most recent project of capturing the imploding bridge here in Atchison, and had to be in place with the camera at 6:30am. Since the implosion didn’t happen until after 9am, I was able to watch the sun rise over the river while drinking coffee and reading for Theology class. It was such a great start to my morning and I really wanted to capture it. Since the camera was all set up to photograph the implosion, I whipped out my trusty old phone with its less-than-stellar camera and captured the moment anyway! I realized that sometimes recording the memory is more important than having all the techniques down pat anyway.
